There’s a bug in the Messages app in iOS 27 that’s been there since its release, through the latest update. And it’s annoying the hell out of me.

A new setting in iOS 27 lets you customize that little microphone button that shows up in the Messages app. It’s the same button that Justin Bieber once complained about.
My preference for that setting is to keep the microphone button there for dictation. I find that I dictate a lot of my texts.
But if I open the Messages app on my phone, tap on a conversation, and then tap that microphone button — something I can do fairly quickly thanks to muscle memory — the final tap sometimes doesn’t trigger dictation.

Instead, it acts as if I’ve tapped the New Conversation button, taking me out of the exchange I was looking to contribute to and into an entirely blank conversation. So instead of starting to dictate the text I want to send, I have to back out of this new blank conversation, find the one I was after, tap into it, and then tap on the microphone button again.
With each new update to iOS, I hope that maybe this bug will be fixed. So far, it hasn’t been.
The looping GIF attempts to show this happening in real time.
Perhaps complaining about it publicly will help this bug get some attention.
